Wind Getting Up Again

Today started off with a passing squall giving me a very wet wake-up while reefing down and trying to catch it on camera (see pic below). I'd have thought it was pretty clear that I was wide awake after the first wave but apparently not. To think that some people start their day with a quiet coffee!

I'm loving your blog posts and videos, especially as quite a few days can sneak past between check ins on my behalf at this time of year.

I have to say how much your "wake up" shot of the wave punching over the boat, totally rocks... way good that one. What camera are you using out there....maybe a Lumix ?.

Anyway, stay focused and stay safe, and hell......enjoy the ride as I know you are definitely doing. Your already in the history books girl and way up there with Australia's young achievers.

Hey jess. Great pic ! you did well. Seems you are getting quite a few odd squalls - to be expected I guess, but as usual you handle it with that Jess 'can do' style. Never mind bout the cooking, as long as you eat as healthy as you possibly can do. Get as much sleep as you can too. You are amazing. Keep up the good work. I had a couple of contractors at my business today and the conversation got to you, these guys said they check your blog every night too - wow you are a phenomona or is it phenomomen .... Anyway you are doing great gal. Keep up the good work. Enjoy standing behind the dodger getting the occasional spray to cool you down. Have a great day tomorrow.

WOAH !!! that's some pretty strong wind, hope EPL is not to uncomfortable down below, I remeber when we used to head into the wind on our boat we were basically living upside down.

Another Day

Mostly just the usual out here today, still flying along really nicely, any tips on avoiding speed cameras?! A few squalls have kept me busy reefing in and out and I spent a lot of my down time today catching up on a little sleep after being kept awake last night with a passing boat and a few little squalls.

Good to see your charging along and enjoying your time out there, let's face it, it's about 101% more "life enhancing" and fun doing what you are than being locked back in the rat race of the big city.

Always wanted to sail around the world one day, but between this and that distraction (excuses, escuses etc.,), never got round to it. Will have to look into it more though...and take that leap off the precipice, as that's what it's all about...isn't it...just going for it. You are brave!

Coincidentally, and not wanting to take anything away from your adventure (as if I could), there was a showing here on a UK channel about three weeks ago concerning a school boy doing the around the world trip too. Don't know his name, however, if you are going through anything that he went through, then....WOW...you are brave.

Of course, some will have said that you were foolish, but what would they know...jealous all the way I would imagine.

Keep positive, happy, and face the days ahead with a smile. Rock the world as only you know it, and if you get the chance, give a look in my direction soem time. Wish I was there (and not) if you know what I mean, as it wouldn't be solo then :))

just a question: it seems like your current course is taking you almost due south.

why aren't you headed more to the southeast? are you hoping to pick up the westerlies in the far southern latitudes and ride them past cape horn?

Good to see things are going so well,i had my own little adventure today, got on the wrong bus in Berlin,Germany and ended up in the deepest part of the old East Germany where more Russian than German is spoken quite the adventure and a lovely afternoon really but not a Mangoes in sight,in this part of the world unfortunately, but i will be home in Brissy in a couple of weeks so i will have a fresh one for you.

Flying Along and Mangos

Heeled over, under full sail and throwing water everywhere Ella's Pink Lady has been flying along today. It can't just be me that's busting to get south! The wind has come round to the east a little more, meaning that we've been able to ease off the wind a little, making life a little more comfortable and reach along directly south.

Oh mangoes! Don't you just love 'em. They're in the shops here in Brisbane but they're far too expensive for me to buy. I remember them on the farm when I was just a kid and I remember the generous farmers when I was a deputy principal of a high school in Proserpine urging us to help ourselves before the flying foxes got to them.

I used to teach great circle geometry. You are experiencing it. Your lessons will be much more enjoyable than learning from a textbook.

It's lovely tonight in Brisbane. We have hot days and then a lovely cool breeze at night.

Washing Machine

It hasn't been the most amazing out here today, overcast, squally and the sea has been a bit of a mess, it must be a lot like the inside of a washing machine! Bob predicted that the swell would become a little uncomfortable with an east going current clashing with the south easterly wind and believe me, he was right! I have to admit my mood was reflecting the grey sky for a while this afternoon so I had to give myself a good talking to, it didn't take much and I'm right back to feeling 100% positive again.

First and foremost,You are a brave girl to take on your adventure.I sincerely hope all the rigging,rudder,sails,hold up for ya.Not hardly a "unassisted" attempt. The next time you throw trash in the ocean put the sat phone and computer in with it. Being in international waters I assume this is where the trash is going? Maybe its just me but i have trouble with a "round the world unassisted attempt" when you have all the advice and mommy at the touch of a button. Eight months at sea is not about the boat and it holding up as much as your emotional state.Sorry for the negative post but i think it needs to be put into the right prospective here. Be safe and I hope ya don't run out of batteries.

In Tuesday's post, it was nice to hear you say "if you don't hear from me, I'm just too busy sailing and having fun!" I hope you can continue saying every day is fun, until the finish line.

As a fellow adventurer, mountain climber, I highly admire this herculean task you are attempting. If I was in your shoes, I think what I would miss most would be fresh food, so it was exciting to see your first fish catch on Monday.

I agree with Toni McLean "Starbucks coffee isn't that good so stay well clear!". Try some kombucha when back in Australia. It's much better.

South Again

We crossed back into the southern hemisphere this evening, its nice to be back home! I said a quick hi to Neptune and thanked him for the fish! Still no sign of the big red line though, I'm starting to think that all this water must have washed it away?!

Finally a Fish!

Yes I'm more than a little pleased and very relieved to report that I finally got a fish! (see pic below). That was starting to get a bit silly. My best guess is that it's a yellow fin tuna, its not huge but I'm sure that there will be plenty for everyone! I can't say that there would be many fisherman who would be proud of the mess I made filleting it. I'm just glad there was no one here to witnesses the whole thing, but practice makes perfect right?!

Around Kiritimati Island

Winds on the nose and a current against us for the last few days has made for pretty painful progress, we're only just getting close to Kiritimati (Christmas) Island now. All going to plan we should be around and clear by the morning, it'll be a relief to have a bit of sea room and to be making progress south again.

Just as well you're doing this when you're 16. You're putting so many places on your list to go back to you'll need the rest of your life to get to them all :-)

Pity about the currrents and wind. It can be quite depressing to mark your place on the chart - do people still do that or is it all electronic now? - and see that you haven't moved far despite hours of sailing? And tacking against currents feels like an exercise in futility sometimes - all that effort just to make sure you don't go backwards!

Still your sunny personality is shining through.

I haven't read all the previous blogs but my guess is the buoys belong to the fishing boats. They lay lines hundreds of miles long with multiple hooks attached and then go back to check them later. Long line fishing! We saw them a bit. We were also chased by a fishing boat once when we guess we went too close to them - quite unintentional on our part. But they were in Australian waters and no doubt felt worried that they would get caught, so they followed us for hours, I guess to scare us a bit. They did!

By now you will definitely be pointing southward for the 'downhill'run.

No change that I can see. The water is still blue, the waves are still rolling and the wind still blowing, but apparently now the water splashing across the deck and slipping away behind Ella's Pink Lady, is northern hemisphere water!

Okay....we've had lots and lots and lots of rain fall this weekend, up to 50mm here in Melbourne...I know something about too, I did my 20th Running of the Olympic Dream Fun Run today...its just 10K...but it rained all the blasted time!....I dedicated it to you Jess....the Jessica Run...everybody who finishes gets a medallion this year commemorating Kerryn McCann, one medal for finishing the event and a gold medal for those who have completed 20 years, I have them hanging off the Ships clock and Barometer of which we have a picture of you sticky taped to the wall in between them!...

I note you're on your way South....are you going to give yourself a "second" dunking as you cross the equator again???....I'd love to see you do that again...just be'en cheeky.

I'm also impressed with the way you think ahead...I think we've all become aware of your sense of maturity of understanding the sea....

I wondered if you had DVD's on board...well now we know, now we have to guess what your favorite movies are!

We're watching the latest Harry Potter film on Blue Ray on the theater system...a 4 meter screen!....normally its called the Wall!

so far so good, just remember your attempting something that would make the hardest of sea dogs shake with fear. The next two weeks should produce more of the same calm and reasonable conditions. It can't get much better than this.

I kept looking up into the sky near Mars for some Leonid Meteors but I had no luck at 2am - 4am on the 18th and 19th November. I kept on watching the sky with binoculars, had a good look at my favourite constellation Orion and planet Mars of course.

I posted this before,but for those who are interested in the Night-sky and the stars above Jessica here it is again:

Now that Ella's pink lady has officially crossed the Equator, Jessica should be able to see Polaris the North Polar Star just above the horizon in the North.

The North Polar Star is only visible on the Equator and North of the Equator.The Heavens-Above site is a favourite with Astronomers and those who want to learn more about celestial navigation.

The site is free,but to use it properly, it is best to register in order to be able to save and configure observation sites for example: Kiritimati , Kiribati (Christmas Island), 2.0718°N, 157.7197°W

put in the Time in UTC and you are ready to see what the sky above Kiribati looks like night and day or any year you choose and from any point on Earth.

Learn about the constellations planets and stars as they appearoverhead in the night sky.You will also be able to track the International Space Station as it passes overhead the Ella's pink lady or any observation site you choose.

Shooting Star and Crossing the Line Tomorrow!

I'm not much of an Astronomer but with all this talk of meteor showers last night, I was keeping an extra good eye out and did see the most amazing shooting star. It was so bright and big that I was actually a bit spooked before realizing what it was. But I can't tell you what I wished for though!

Wowza, Jessica -- can't believe how long Silly stayed with you! Also, can't believe you participated in the Leonid meteor shower -- I planned that for a few days but alas, the clouds moved in. I will sure be thinking today about what the milestone of the equatorial crossing means to you and all who support you. In addition to the celebration, pause to give thanks to the one described in those verses above who continues to accompany and care well for you. I am sure that by the time you read this, you have crossed the equator! So, I wish to congratualte you on a fine crossing!
I missed the shooting stars the news was talking about. We were supposed to see them at 4am. Um, it's too cold at 4AM to go out and watch the stars shoot!

The first thing I will be doing when I get to work in the morning, is to log on to see if you have crossed the line. At 0700 in WA should be about 1100-1200 your time?
It's a little strange how a imagery line can cause so much excitement, but we all are having a great time as you are.
The meteorite out were you are with the clear black sky would be awesome, the chances of one hitting you is very remote, so enjoy.
Let us know what you did to celebrate the crossing, heaps of photos if possible. One question does it cost you much to send photos over the net with your system?
So have a great time crossing the equator, keep having fun and keep safe.

Tonite, today, tomorrow ... and the dateline to add even more confusion to the mix: For someone halfaway around the globe away from you it's sometimes very difficult to figure out, what day and time it is right now with you.

So this is rather a suggestion to the people managing your website (thanks for that, by the way!): Why not adding an "Ella Clock" to the starting page or the map, which always shows the date and time aboard your boat?

Maybe I'm the only one a bit confused about all those numbers (I'm very bad at any kind of number shifting), but to me that would seem a real help.

I wish you much fun at your line crossing ceremony and friendly winds furthermore!
