Well things did get a bit exciting the other night when the wind suddenly picked up with a huge swing in direction. One minute it was a quiet, starry night and Ella's Pink Lady was sailing along comfortably under full sail. The next minute the wind was gusting well over 35 knots with Ella's Pink Lady healing right over taking off in the wrong direction. Getting soaking wet at 2 o'clock in the morning isn't exactly all that out of the ordinary, but this time with the southerly wind, the waves and icy rain were particularly cold and un-welcome.
After gybing us over and once everything was under control again, I went back below to hear a strange electrical noise. It was the kind of noise that instantly has you thinking 'not good'. After a desperate few minutes emptying lockers trying to find the problem, all the while imagining all sorts of critical damage, I was very relieved to discover that the noise was coming from the little hand-held vacuum packer which had switched itself on. I had a good and laugh at myself over that one!The weather stayed windy and squally with the sea building up to 5m, so as we approached Amsterdam Island, sightseeing wasn't at the top of my priority list and we ended up passing well clear to the north during the night.
Maybe next time I'll get a better look. Both Amsterdam Island (see pic below) and St Paul Island sound like they have pretty colourful histories. All these little islands in the middle of nowhere seem to come with stories of shipwrecked sailors surviving for years, before being picked up by other ships. But the story about these islands that really caught my attention was one about a company that set up a lobster cannery on St Paul before going bankrupt, leaving 7 of their workers stranded on the island. When someone eventually remembered the poor guys and came to pick them up three years later, there were only two survivors. Imagine being forgotten and abandoned on a little island completely in the middle of nowhere! Jesse
The wind and sea has now dropped off again. Actually I wouldn't mind a bit more wind right now, as we're not exactly going anywhere too fast. So it's time to pull out the patience hat till things do pick up a little more. Talking of wind, I was sorry to hear about the damage from the cyclone that crossed the Queensland coast last week and hearing about all the boats washed up and wrecked in Airlie Beach.

Pic 2: Add a fair bit of imagination and you can just see Amsterdam Island!

I have read your blog and you are an inspiration to me of how a 16 year old girl can sail around the world. AMAZING. It seems like you have experinced a lot of differnt conditions out on the sea. At school at the moment we are doing heros and I admire what you do. I am sure you can't wait to get back home to your friends and family and you have told me that it is possible to become a hero even when you are young or in the teens.
!!!!!!GO GIRL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good luck , Jesse

"Description: This island was discovered by the Spanish explorer Juan Sebastián Elcano on March 18, 1522. Elcano did not name the island, however.
Having found the island unnamed, the Dutch captain Anthonie van Diemen named it Nieuw Amsterdam (Dutch for New Amsterdam) after his ship in 1633.
French Captain François Péron, was marooned three years on this island. Péron had been on the French ship Emélie, which wrecked on New Amsterdam Island in 1792. In 1795 he was taken to Australia by ship Ceres. His 'Memoires', in which he describes his survival alone on New Amsterdam, were published in a limited edition and are now an expensive collectors' item.
In 1871 a British frigate, HMS Megaera, was wrecked in this lonely island. Most of the 400 persons on board had to remain upwards of three months on the island.
The islands of Île Amsterdam and Île Saint-Paul were attached to Madagascar in 1924 and hence became a French colony.
The first French base in New Amsterdam was erected in 1949, and was originally called Camp Heurtin.
The Global Atmosphere Watch still has an atmospheric research station on Île Amsterdam."
So it is an interesting little Island and as Jess says in the middle of nowhere.
Great photo Jessica even though the Island was off in the distance.
But your famous photo is still the same SMILING
So as I say Keep Smiling
Cheers and Safe Sailing

We honour you.
You are amazing, and the have shown us aussies, kiwis and the rest of the world what we love to think that we are made of, " The ANZAC Spirit".
You face down the world and its dangers with seeming casual ease, humour and great humility.
You are carrying forward the dream, the name of Australia and our identity into your generation, the "Hero Generation"
Your leadership is inspiring.
My grandfather was at Gollipoli and my father in the Pacific WW2.
They would have been proud.
I love reading your blog. You paint such amazing pictures for us all to imagine. Keep sailing safe and true.
Am thoroughly enjoying your blogs. You are a fine writer with a book in your future, I'm sure. Have tracked you day to day and have a complete log of your positions, headings, nm for each day and cumulative nm's. Positively obsessive. You are almost inside your last full month of sailing. Enjoy the upcoming full moon on Monday..by the time of the next one, it should be setting over Sydney.
Take care, and continue safe in G-d's hands.

Hi Jessica,
Just wanted to drop you a line, I hope you’re enjoying sailing along in a nice sea with a fair wind and bright sunshine. It is about noontime there now (as I’m writing this so it is possible….lol..
Have you tried your luck with fishing anymore?? Or are you spending all your spare time dreaming about what you’re going to do when you get home?? Couldn’t blame you for that. Have you made a list of wanna-do’s, I doubt that you have enough paper on board to cover all that plus all the different foods that you want to taste again…lol…
HTML is on strike again, and I don’t even feel like messing with it anymore. Besides, it usually effects the rest of the comments. It’s a real bummer.
But you hang in there Jessica, be cautious, take care of EPL and all them Scallywags.
May God be with you and watch over you and may the angels keep your sails full, and I, I will keep you in my prayers.
Loads of love and hugs, your faithful friend, fan and follower.

Well I have a storm on my horizon that starts approx 5pm today. Pa has to look after 2 grandchildren by himself until Monday while the rest ie wife daughter and son in law go to reunion....I lost the toss.So if I don't write tomorrow you'll know why. AND they only dropped this wonderous news on me last night! having known for weeks this boooze up was on. Pa's planning has been intense overnight... we have more activities going so they won't hav time to argue fight or whinge...not that they do much of that anyway. So Jess peace reigns in your part of the world bobbing along while I am frantic....hope they like my cooking....no one else does...still there's always Maccas which they are not allowed normally!!!!! good voyaging,

another nice blog.
I can understand you not wanting to catch sight of Australia as you pass close, it would be such a temtation to turn, left hand down a bit and sail for land.
Is'nt it time to put that crew out to work ????, give them a fishing line and tell them, NO fish...NO lollyies.
Loved the last photo of you. You look so happy and content with
EPL. What a great boat, she has lookrd after you well. Maybe it should end up in a museum. Would be a big draw card.
Keep smiling Jesse and stay safe......old Keco.....xxxxx
