Wednesday, February 24, 2010
Well that's it. Another ocean and cape down! It took a while with light winds for the last few days but Ella's Pink Lady has passed under Cape Agulhas, but being 400nm south of land I couldn't quite see it this time. A bright orange half moon and a spectacular sky of stars was enough of a celebration. But of course, I also put a bit of a dent in the chocolate supplies and let off a few party poppers!
There's still so many miles to cover across the Indian and then around the bottom of Australia, but it really feels like we're on the homeward leg now. Only 4,200nm till Cape Leeuwin and Australia, a very exciting and slightly scary thought! The lovely weather over the last few days has more than made up for our slowish speeds. As a high pressure system passed over us, we've had perfect clear skies, warm sunshine, gentle seas, plenty of birds and the odd
albatross for company. In between a lot of enjoying the sunshine and contemplating how perfect it all was, I also used the quiet conditions to keep up with a few jobs and give everything a good double-check over. I made a total mess re-applying Sika flex to the odd persistent leak. Also snapped another two needles and put a few holes in my hands re-stitching one of the tears in the mainsail, then threaded on new windvane lines after finally giving up on the chafed and scruffy old set.
I think that last picture and caption in the blog may have needed a little more explanation. To cut a long story short it was the result of an amusing conversation, fun and slightly ridiculous challenge set by Don McIntyre and Mike Perham! For anyone who isn't familiar with the background, Don and Margie McIntyre are the guys the loaned me Ella's Pink Lady and provided an incredible kickstart to the voyage and project. Mike's the current record holder for 'youngest round' record (not to be confused with Jesse Martins non-stop, unassisted voyage) and he's also a friend. Despite the damage I'm hoping to do to his record Mike has been amazingly supportive. Anyway it's worth a read at www.bountyboat.com/ to see what Don and Mike are up to at the moment and why Don won't be there to see us sail back into Sydney.
As always, good things can't last forever and with a front and some nasty weather expected tomorrow, my quiet few days are over for now. Back to reality and more typical Southern Ocean sailing. Hopefully we can use the strong winds to make a serious dent into the Indian Ocean!
Jesse

You know when people are giving directions and they say:
"Just go straight ahead. You can't miss it". Well, it's definitely true
for you now! I suppose you just have to make sure you duck under Tassie.
Another month and you will be the headlines again as you sail round the bottom and up the side.
That was good timing, 1500 nm in 10 days! Let's hope you can keep that average up.
Cheers
Toni
Yes, I saw good old Don on the news. How good is he. So glad he loaned you beautiful EPL for the trip. A decision I am sure that he will be very proud of for a very long time. Have fun Take care, cheers Paula

Our primary school is run like a ship. The rooms are called Cabins, the library is the Chartroom, the Canteen is the Galley, the undercovr area is the quarterdeck and the office is the Bridge. The children say "Ahoy there!" instead of "Hello!" and we have a strong tie to the navy at Garden Island. It is definitely a unique and (I think) the best school in West Australia.
So when the students post a comment and it is from Cabin 1, hopefully you will understand that that is like saying Room 1.
All the students are so excited you are now in our ocean. Take care and we will write every day next week.

I've been dropping a comment every so often throughout your trip. I have you as one of my 8 homepages, so I check in every day.
I'm really believing you are going to make it!!!

Don't brag too much, tough cookie. It could make a serious dent in you, but hope not.
Lydia Lassila did herself and Australia proud in gaining a Gold medal for the aerials.
Other than the feats of the Olympians there is little good news around, as usual, so count yourself lucky, Jess to be away from it all! Politicians are still bickering amongst themselves...nothing changes! ;)
AC/DC laid over 45,000 fans in the aisle last night in Brisbane! They are the true legends of rock & roll!
Grant Denyer from Sunrise got married on Hamilton Island over the weekend.
Danni Minogue is pregnant. Whitney Houston has proved she's past her use-by date during her Aussie concerts.
Just a bit of nonsensical trivia!!!
Thank God for people like you, Jessica...you restore my faith in human nature...something that is severely strained at times!
Keep punching those waves...roll with the rolls...and make speedy progress. We're all behind you, pushing you along the way!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY EMILY.[though belated from the U.S.]
Sounds it's smooth surfing for the ''Pink Lady'' and you, don't forget to ''HANG TEN OFF THE BOW''...
In and out weather is no fun,but to be sailing along at a nice clip, without any storms to worry about for now must be a little easier for now.Hope your ''stuffy crew'' is staying out of trouble.
We are going to get up to 60 mile per hour winds over night, being in a high rise, guess I'll batten down the hatches tonight.
I posted two comments yesterday, but it looks like only one got through, got to get used to this new site,or watch my ''text image'' I key in.
That's all for now,we missed the snow storm today for a change, looks like the Northeast is getting the brunt of it,DON'T MISS IT ONE BIT.
Take care, stay safe, hugs to all on your crews.
Godspeed, smooth sailing,we continue to be in aw of you young lady.

13-15 Then God was right before him, saying, "I am God, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac. I'm giving the ground on which you are sleeping to you and to your descendants. Your descendants will be as the dust of the Earth; they'll stretch from west to east and from north to south. All the families of the Earth will bless themselves in you and your descendants. Yes. I'll stay with you, I'll protect you wherever you go, and I'll bring you back to this very ground. I'll stick with you until I've done everything I promised you."
Good morning to you, Jessica! Another cape passed and into yet another of this earth's seemingly endless oceans! You are doing it!
Jesse, can you imagine what you've seen, experienced, and appreciated in your young life. You have an appreciation of east versus west, the sheer magnitude of this earth, the majesty of God's creatures and creation, that few others can ever have. And you have your life ahead of you!
Once long ago, God, speaking to Jacob, said the things in these verses, and of course they came to pass. God's chosen people came from this promise.
And it gets better -- God sent His son as a perfect, permanent sacrifice so that all of us have the opportunity to spend eternity with Him. You say regarding the weather that as always, good things can't last forever, but today I just ask you to consider that there's one good thing that can -- the best thing -- God's promises to His people. Unfailing, forever.
Today I am praying for you as you know you are facing rougher weather and seas, for your confidence and strength, and wisdom for you as you prepare and have to make decisions. I am also praying for your health and good rest. And, I'm giving thanks for the promise that He will stay with you, protecting you wherever you go, sticking with you until He has done everything He has promised you!
Another Cape disappears in your wake.
I guess by now you are either into or maybe through that bad weather system, hopefully it was nothing compared to after the Horn.
You are already a gold medal winner in my eyes, so I wonder if there is a possibility of us bloggers seeing you competing in the next or one of the coming Summer Olympics....as this description from suite101dotcom fits you,
"Single design is meant to ensure the best sailor and not the best boat will win in sailing competition."
Be safe, healthy and happy.
Ozca,
from the great Bras d'Or Lakes.
Congratulations agail!
Yours, Oliver
"So move aside she has arrived
With her baby neck and sleepy eyes
She has heels that walk all over you
She's a danger you're addicted to
Angela, Angela you're a danger he's addicted to
Oh Angela, Angela you're a danger he's addicted to
And I try to be more like you
Speak louder and prouder"....
