Nothing much new about the weather to report. It's still calm, warm and sunny. Lovely clear days followed by amazing sunsets. Our speeds have been slightly on and off as Ella's Pink Lady sometimes flies along on the flat water and sometimes just sits there, drifting forward ever so slightly.
Yesterday we found a flock of 'groppies'. These birds spent the day landing in the water next to us, watching us sail past, drifting off behind, then taking off to fly around in a big circle, landing next to us again. The bird's fascination with Ella's Pink Lady may have had something to do with the crackers and tinned vegetables I threw to them (yes I'm very pleased to have finally found a use for vegetables!). But whatever it was that had them coming back, it was nice to have the company.
Talking of company, for the first time in quite a while the AIS alarm went off yesterday, warning me of an approaching ship. Our paths looked set to pass pretty close and as it was a lovely clear day and I didn't happen to be sleeping at the time, I actually welcomed a bit of excitement. I pulled the washing down, brushed my hair and turned the stereo down in anticipation, so was a bit disappointed when they ended up passing too far off for me to make out the crew. Still, I had a nice conversation over the VHF with the watch-keeper who told me that they were also headed to Australia, to Port Kembla which is only just south of Sydney. They wished me luck before quickly disappearing again.
Later the wind dropped off and the sea glassed right out as the sun was setting which was just totally spectacular. The water was just like a mirror reflecting firstly the pink of the setting sun, then when it was dark, the stars. The silence was amazing. It was one of those 'OMG this is really happening' moments. But I could only enjoy it for so long before it became a bit eerie, so I turned the music back on.
Later in the evening I had a chat to Seamus, the pilot of a passenger plane passing close overhead. With all their cabin lights on I was hoping to be able to see them, but in the end our paths didn't quite cross close enough.
On another subject I've been discovering that despite being thousands of miles away and in the middle of the ocean, my brother Tom is still finding ways to annoy me. On top of the usual collection of terrible jokes written all over my food packets (if you'd heard Tom's jokes you'd understand!), this week I found that he had replaced some of the usual treats in the food bag, with a stash of salty plums, which he well knows is my least favorite food ever! He then responded to my complaints by sending me some not so lovely pictures of a recent operation to his toe. Aren't brothers just wonderful? There are definitely some things that I don't miss about home!
Our progress across the Indian Ocean chart is starting to look quite impressive. There's still a lot of them to go but the days and miles until home are really starting to disappear. I'm also expecting to tick off a lot miles over the next week, with some lively weather expected.
Well, I'm off to have lunch which happens to be self-saucing chocolate pudding (with cream and custard of course!). Then, as always, I've got a list of jobs to do before the wind starts getting up.

I am your biggest fan.
i check this page seven times a day.
I just read your latest blogs and it's so funny how you talk about your adventure... Especially how your brother Tom put salty plums (called Sour plums maybe from chinese shops ?) in to your treat bag.
Gosh I wonder if you'll read all these comments when you get back or whilst on pink lady.
Good luck out there.

I am beginning to feel a bit of envy for those who are able to meet and great you coming through the Sydney Heads!
@Cobrarog in Hervey Bay: I have taken to using the 'work around' of locating specific entries to the blog when I am short of time by using the 'Find' function in the browser. But it is actually more fun, entertaining and educational to just read through all the entries when I have time to do so.
Jess, you are causing the creation of a new life style here!! Keep it up!

I can relate to your OMG moment with the calm water. when I was in the navy during WWII we sailed in the South Pacific and on occassion the water was as flat as a mirror. I'll agree that while lookin at it that way was fascinating after awhile it got rather spooky and one began to wonder what is going on. This just isn't right!!!!!Enjoy following your trip and best wishes.

Jessica,
Wow, recognition from the Parliament. What a great honor and yet only a small part of the world wide recognition that you deserve.
Oh, and Jess, make sure that you don’t toss those salty plums in the dunny. That would be the pits.

Jess, you have provided so much joy for so many people. I'm starting to get teary as the days get closer to your reunion with your nation of loved ones. I was looking at the hundreds of friends on your FB page, trying to match photos with their pen names on this site. After about 100 piccies, I laughed at myself and stopped! So much fun, though, trying to put faces to names after all this time. My imagination was going wild. I did find a lovely picture of Richie Paris and it was good to communicate with him.
Who makes the world go 'round? You do, Jess. Along with your team, you are a gem shining from within a worldwide, luminescent ocean shell.
I send you my respect, my love, strength and continued courage as you sail safely and with all the wind you and Pink Lady need. It is such an honor to be able to share this journey with you.

I loved your dscriptions today of the birds and your surroundings. You should write more about the birds, fish, etc, and what you have seen. Have you seen any turtles or whales?
Happy sailing - love to check your progress every day :)
I wonder if the rest of your fan club turn the world the right way up (with South Africa and Australia on top as they should be) and measure the relatively short distance you still need sail to Sydney?
I am thrilled that you are making such good progress but what are we going to do when you reach home and we have no idea of what you are doing?
You have entertained us so well with your blogs for so many months - its going to be really hard to say goodbye!
With you all the way to the end - go girl go!
Hello Jessica, just read the latest news, and glad you have been mentioned in Federal Parliament again. Just looking at passage weather website and hope you have the wind predicted on the site. Councillors on the Sunshine Coast Regional Council should and probably mention your endeavours if not I will in Brisbane. Take care and a safe journey home. As I've mentioned before, my family and I watch your journey regularly. A very brave young woman. Kind regards
My one year old daughter and I are definitely coming to watch you sail back into Sydney harbour. Try and give us some notice as we need to fly there from Brisbane!!! ;)
