I still can't report any great progress towards Australia. This time it's light headwinds that are stopping us making any real progress east. I hate to be one of those people who are always complaining about either too much or too little wind, but it's starting to feel a little like that.
Last night when I gave up adjusting the tiller every few minutes to keep us on course, Ella's Pink Lady actually drifted around in a big circle. I'm not sure it's something to be proud of, but if this was a synchronized loop-drawing contest, we'd have easily taken first prize. It was quite a loop! Maybe there's a future for me being one of those pilots who draw and write things in the sky? Jokes aside, I'd really love to be flying towards Australia right now, but the weather has other ideas. So there's not much I can do other than wait it out and go with the flow.
As always, the calm conditions have been a great chance to keep up with maintenance.
Yesterday I got stuck into a bit of de-squeaking and while going over Ella's Pink Lady with a spray can, I found a few shackles that had worked themselves loose. So it was good to find them now while it's nice and flat.
I also treated myself to a whole bucket full of hot water for a bath. Yesterday, rather than just the normal kettle full. Talk about luxury, even if it did take forever to heat it all up. Queen Mary 2 has nothing on Ella's Pink Lady! There was even left over hot water, so I was able to sit with my feet in it while brushing my hair. Then of course I finished up by turning the heater on to blow dry (my 12 volt hair dryer sadly stopped working back before Cape Horn, a total tragedy!).
The other day when things were still a bit bouncy with those big seas, I was talking to Dad over the satellite phone and he asked me to describe what the motion was like. It made me think about how best to describe it to all you non-sailors out there. I think the main thing is that you're not just moving in one direction and that the motion isn't in the slightest bit consistent. First there's the rolling, maybe like swinging in a hammock. Then add pitching (like on a swing), then there's the occasional acceleration as we take off surfing down a wave, just like you do at the beach. Add a few sudden drops and rises like a hyperactive lift and finish by tilting your whole world on a 45 degree angle. (Sorry I'm struggling to come up with an everyday comparison to that one!). So sort of like living on a roller coaster (well I think that's what a rollercoaster is like, but who knows because I've only been on one once and hardly remember it because I was completely terrified!). But a roller coaster with sudden stops and random sideways jerks, add a bit of noise and a lot of water and that's sailing in 40 knots of wind and big seas.
And talking of the satellite phone, I wanted to put a quick word in for the guys at SatCom Global, who sponsored my Iridium satellite phone and also the Sailor 250 that I use to send these blogs, pictures and video. I mean you have to admit, taking on a 16 year old girl's phone bill is a pretty brave and amazing thing to do. So thanks heaps guys!
Anyway, I'm going to finish up with some good news, I've got some wind again!
While I've been typing this, a nice steady breeze had slowly picked up and Ella's Pink Lady is moving along at over 3 knots in a south easterly direction.
Australia, here we come!
Jesse

Glad to hear you'll be writing a book about your adventures. I'll definitely be getting a coopy when it comes out.
I hope you have not completely finished writing your book yet. If not, could you please include answers to the following questions?
1. Have you ever met Kay Cottee? What sort of things has she said to you?
2. To what degree did she inspire you?
3. I read somewhere that it was reading Jesse Martin's book that first put the idea of circumnavigation into your head.
But at what point did it pass from just an idea to "this is what I going to DO"? That is, what gave you that final push to say to yourself "I'm going to DO this"?
4. For the benefit of other sailors, can you please describe the planning and preparation that went into your voyage?
5. Exactly what electronic and navigation gear did you have on board? And what made you decide on the individual items you chose? (Maybe Bruce Arms could answer this one).
6. You mentioned in one of your blogs that everything is a compromise - what compromises did you have to make in deciding what to take?
7. What was the thinking behind each compromise?
8. What were the planning considerations in changing your route from going up the Atlantic to instead crossing the equator in the Pacific?
9. Why did you have the nav station and all its electronic gear next to the companionway? Wouldnt there be a huge risk of a freak wave dousing all your gear?
10. Would it not be better to have located the nav station forward or amidships?
11. Did you have a desalinator on board? What kind was it and how much use did it get?
12. Did you have to launder all your clothing or did you take along 200 changes of socks and underwear?
13. If you had to wash, what did you do about the salt in the fabric? I imagine it would have been horrible having dried salt in the fabric rubbing on one's skin!
14. What was the effect on skin and hair of washing in salt water for 7 months?
15. Is your diesel engine air cooled or water cooled? If water cooled, wouldn't it be possible to take the water out from that to use to have a hot shower? Ideal in the Southern Ocean!
16. You mention in one of the blogs something about a "diesel heater"? Exactly what is this?
17. What were your favoutite subjects at school?
18. What will you do once you finish school? Merchant Marine? Navy?
I'm sure whatever career you tackle will bring you success. Good luck for your future and THANK YOU for being an inspiration to us all!
Jess you should be an inspiration to yours and all generations no matter what age clearly god was with you and may you always have the wind and sea in your heart.
Take care on this last leg of your trip Tony
Your not far away now!

This is the first time my husband and I have posted a comment to you. We would like to congratulate you on your outstanding achievement and bravery to circumnavigate the world at such a young age. Your parents are to be congratulated in supporting and allowing you to experience such an adventure. We have followed you from the onset of your journey and needing to return to Sydney before your second departure. I guess for us it would be spectacular to be in Sydney seeing your arrival comming through the heads. Our thoughts are with you.
Where are you girl at your almost moment of triumph you have made no progress are you ok regards Bernie
Having been following your blog for some time now. You are such a BRAVE girl, and should be so proud of yourself. We all look forward to your safe arrival in Australia. take care Jess Good Luck

What an amazing journey you are having. I dont like the Manly ferry going through the heads let alone in a small yacht like yours. May you have a safe trip home .
Happy Easter to an amazing young person you are an inspiration to every one. Check in each day to see your progress. From Tassie
I have been keeping an eye on your blog and reading the posts, but always seem to run out of time before I post a comment.
Your mum dropped in and spent an afternoon with Wendy and I about three weeks ago which was nice. Great to see her again and I loved getting all the news first hand from her. It was rivetting for me just listening to her relay your stories and her own...I really enjoyed our time together and Wendy and Julie obviously had plenty to talk about.
I went to Hawaii in Feb to shoot the winter season and hit the jackpot.....big waves and I had a great time as always.
Enough of me..........onto you. I just love your explanation of the feeling of being at sea. The way you explain it I think is bang on. I don't think I've ever heard it described in a better way actually. You giving comparisons to swings, hammocks etc is a great way to convey the feeling, particularly the bit about taking off down the face like making the drop in surfing.
You are getting so close to coming home and completing your amazing journey now, you must be getting amped up and so excited on a regular basis and why wouldn't you. Just look at what you've done and the ground you've covered (or maybe that should be ocean you've covered), You really should be proud of your achievement as everyone back here certainly is. You are truly a strong little charger for want of a better word.
Doing a bit of "circle work" out there is all good to by the way.
Take care and bring it on home Jess.
Cheers from all of us.
Now a thing about the "Blue Moon" the term Blue Moon comes about when we get two consecutive Full Moons in the same calendar month which is rare but happens about once every 33 months, in the 18th and 19th Centuries creators of Almanacs would print the Full Moon in Blue if there were going to be two Full Moons in the same month as a way of distinguishing between a "normal full Moon" which completes one orbit and therefore returns to the same phase every 29.5 days....Jess when did you take that Moon picture, if it was on the 30th of March then you definitely caught a picture of the Blue Moon!....it's funny how it even has a bluish tinge!
To Evie from Bendigo I am hoping your Grandson pulls through my thoughts are also with you...
Jesse, I was once at Dream World I think it was called, there was two Roller Coaster Rides I remember well, the Thunderbolt which has a 360 degree Loop and the Corkscrew ride which took you through three tight twists i.e. a corkscrew do you think enjoying rides like that would be a perquisite for taking on being a Sailor??
Agree with SaltyDog...many thanks to Satcom Global too, you guys obviously have a very reliable communications device which has been engineered extremely well, if I ever go out to Sea...I will definitely have the Sailor 250 unit with me!...
Okay I've just seen and read Richie's April Fools Dear Jessica thing....oh boy what an imagination you have Richie...very clever stuff I'm feeling jealous now...lets see what can I do to beat that....hmmmmm??
Where Are You SAM I AM!!!
What else...ummmm, oh yea, Mel's comment "typical 16 year old doing donnuts at Sea"....that made me laugh out loud, we've got some hoons in our street here that carry on a fair bit, anyway that was good Mel!
And it is very nice to Jessica's Grandpa and Grandma saying hi again, come on you other guys your most welcome to leave a comment here to..Emily, and Tom love to see one of your Jokes!
Okay I could go on....to all Bloggers please have a safe Easter and enjoy the long weekend....By the way us Victorians lose an hour tonight we go back to non Summer Time timing....I much prefer the extra daylight in the eveing but now it gonna be dark by 5:30-6:00pm....yuk!

@SnoopDog, it depends on how it comes, of what I feel having to say to some of our blogging friends, and mostly of what our young Captain inspires: and we all know how inspirational she is!!! And this extra-comment is partly to answer you! No Bday, it was 3 months ago. But my line is no "hollow" comment ever: either constructive, entertaining, caring or informative. At least, I try.
@Thank you Mary (Maine), Bongo, Babs, Anonymous, and the two mysterious IDs Edrem and Elluaged Selrach. Very, very kind words. No writer (yet), but the inspiration victim of an incredible adventurer (cf supra).
Sorry for having commented too much today. I'll try to be quieter in the future.
Go, Jessica, Go! Or should we yell "Come, Jessica, Come!" now that you are close to tying the pink ribbon?
The hot bath sounded like paradise and I can see your proud as punch smile from here.
You are creeping closer each day so ENJOY.
Happy Easter and enjoy those eggs I'm sure Easter bunny has hidden aboard.
Cheers
Dot
Date Friday 2nd April and a happy and safe Easter to you
Well Jess things have certainly been going around in circles for you, one day blowing you around all over the place and the next almost becalmed. As usual, of course both you and E'sPL handle it with aplomb. Your blogs are the most facinating in description and delightfull to read, so positive regardless of the situation. You are certainly a young woman mentally mature beyond your years, any parents dream come true. If only this quality that you have could be transported into the young generations coming along. I am sure that the requests for inspiational speaking engagements will come flooding in. However, on the other hand you have also your own education to complete and that is the most important Goal for you to focus on.
As so many have said What will we do with ourselves when you are home safe and sound?
From what I gather you have the largest ever adopted family and friends, the Moms, Dads, Grandparents, and young people from all over the world including Japan; China; Russia; England; Canada; America; South America; New Zealand; Africa; Philippines just name a few including many in Europe Holland; Germany; Greece et-al ever seen or heard of in this cyber world. Quite an achievement of its own don't you think.
I have wondered just what Jessica Watson's next real goal would be, but for me maybe besides writing, I can see a pair of Captain's Wings pinned to the left breast pocket of a uniform. Maybe QANTAS after training, flying one of their new Boeing 787s. The job is both glamourous, challanging and hugely responsible. Something that is not beyond your capabilities
